A Florence man has been charged with aggravated animal abuse after police say they found a dog dead in a creek.

According to police, the incident happened Sunday when officers responded to an animal welfare check at the bridge near the 300 block of Minniehaha Street.

A witness told police that he heard an animal in what sounded like distress and saw a man physically abusing a dog.

When officers arrived, they found a small white dog dead in the creek.

The witness described the suspect.

Kevin Bruce, 33, was later questioned and arrested

His bond at the Lauderdale County Detention Center was set at $2,500.
