Fleeing suspect shot by Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies near I-20 in Birmingham

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies shot a person after a chase Tuesday afternoon in east Birmingham.

The scene is still active and no details have been released.

The ordeal appears to have started with a pursuit that traveled from Interstate 20 to Messer Airport Highway.

There were possibly two wrecks during the pursuit.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was going the wrong way on the exit ramp from I-20 onto Messer Airport Highway with deputies still in pursuit when he wrecked his car.

The witnesses said he got out armed with a Draco gun and was shot three times in the back. Authorities have not confirmed that account.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has been called into lead the investigation which is standard for officer-involved shootings.
