Flash flood warning affecting Cullman and Morgan counties until Friday evening triggered by thunderstorms
A flash flood warning was released by the National Weather Service on Friday at 5:19 p.m. in effect until 8:30 p.m. for Cullman and Morgan counties.
“At 5:19 p.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Three to four inches of rain are estimated to have fallen in this area over a general 3 hour period. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly,” according to the weather service. “Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.”
Locations impacted by the warning include Falkville, Baldwin, West Point, Jones Chapel, Battleground, Logan, Lacon and Crane Hill. Emergency Management has reported a rock slide in association with the heavy rainfall along portions of Hurricane Creek near U.S. Highway 31 in northern Cullman County. This may exacerbate flash flooding.
The weather service adds, “Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”
