First time in 20 years, Trader Joe’s said it’s raising the price on this fruit

The price of bananas has gone up at Trader Joe’s. For more than 20 years, the grocery store chain famously sold bananas for 19 cents. But the grocery recently raised the price to 23 cents– a 20 % increase.

“We only change our prices when our costs change, and after holding our price for Bananas at 19 cents each for more than two decades, we’ve now reached a point where this change is necessary,” a Trader Joe’s spokesperson told CNN.

While Trader Joe’s is raising the price of its bananas, the grocer is also dropping the prices of a few items, according to Nextstar. Raw almonds are a dollar cheaper per pound, romaine lettuce hearts are 50 cents cheaper, and green onions are now 99 cents.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price of bananas in the U.S. has remained steady from February 2023 to February 2024, averaging 62 to 64 cents a pound throughout the year, CNN reported.
