First earthquake in 2023 detected in north Alabama
A small earthquake was detected Wednesday morning in a rural area of north Alabama, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The USGS said the earthquake was a magnitude 2.3, which is generally minor enough not to be noticed or to cause any damage. There were no immediate reports of the earthquake being felt.
The quake occurred at 6 a.m. with the epicenter in the Bankhead National Forest about 8.6 miles north of Double Springs in Winston County and about 31.8 miles west northwest of Cullman. The quake was detected about 4.3 miles below the ground.
It’s the first earthquake detected in Alabama in 2023, though there have been several this year in northwest Georgia near the Alabama state line.
