Fire, possible explosion at oil refinery sends black cloud over Tuscaloosa
Authorities are on the scene of a possible explosion at Hunt Oil in Tuscaloosa that sent plumes of smoke over parts of the city.
Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Holly Whigham said fire crews were dispatched at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday for an “incident” at the refinery, located at 2017 62nd Avenue.
She declined to say whether an explosion had taken place.
As of about 12:45 p.m., Whigham said, the fire was under control.
Whigham said authorities were still working to stabilize the scene, evaluate possible injuries and make sure everyone is accounted for.
By 1:30 p.m., Whigham said firefighters were returning to regular service and Hunt’s response team was taking over the scene.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox released this statement:
“I’m incredibly proud of the swift and professional response by Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue and Tuscaloosa Police, who worked quickly to secure the scene and assist on site.”
“I also want to commend Hunt Oil’s team for their preparedness and immediate action. Their cooperation with our first responders made a critical difference in managing today’s emergency.”
