One sunny March afternoon on Dauphin Island, as young people lounged under colorful beach umbrellas or swam in the Gulf, three school-aged girls and some professional scientists were sifting through the sands of time.

Their quest? To find fossils that could add to the record of what creatures roamed Alabama waters millions of years ago.
