Fifth-ranked Vestavia Hills rolls past Spain Park
Vestavia Hills quarterback John Paul Head and running back William Tonsmeire both ran for 100-plus yards to help lift the Rebels to a 26-8 home win over Spain Park on Friday at Vestavia’s Buddy Anderson Field at Reynolds Stadium.
Head had 29 carries for 133 yards while Tonsmeire got 122 on 11 attempts, including a 62-yard touchdown.
The fifth-ranked Rebels rolled up 428 total yards in improving to 4-1 on the year and 2-1 in Class 7A, Region 3.
Head completed 10-of-18 passes for 160 yards with a pair of touchdowns and one interception. Seven receivers caught passes in the win with Chase Webb scoring on a 36-yard play and Garner Leake getting a TD on a 17-yarder. Hayes Hudson caught three passes for 46 yards to lead the Rebels.
Owen Simpson hit a pair of field goals, from 44 and 20 yards away.
Vestavia led 19-0 before Spain Park (2-3, 0-3) got on the board on a 16-yard run by Dakarai Shanks with 6:35 left in the game. Shanks led the Jaguars with 40 yards on the ground on 10 carries. Derick Shanks passed to Brock Bradley for the two-point conversion.
University of Tennessee commitment Jordan Ross led the Vestavia Hills defense with 12 unassisted tackles, five sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Jacob Watson had four unassisted stops in the win.
Bradley completed 9-of-17 passes for 70 yards for Spain Park. William Lloyd was 2-for-2 for 38 yards.
The winners were 9-for-15 on third down and 1-for-1 on fourth down and had a total of 24 first downs to nine for the Jaguars. Spain Park converted 3-of-13 third-down tries and was 1-of-4 on fourth down.
Vestavia Hills holds a 15-6 advantage in the series and has won six straight.
Both teams are off next week before Vestavia Hills plays at Chelsea on Oct. 6. Spain Park travels to Northport to meet Tuscaloosa County.
