Female pedestrian killed, 2-year-old child she was holding hurt after being struck by SUV near Opelika

A 59-year-old woman was killed and a 2-year-child she was holding were injured when they were hit by an SUV as they tried to cross a Lee County road Sunday night, authorities said Monday.

Tonya K. Moore, 59, of Cusseta, was struck by a 2016 Dodge Journey around 6:45 p.m. Sunday on Lee County Road 270 near Lee County Road 273, about 11 miles northeast of Opelika, said Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Lt. Jeremy Burkett.

Moore was taken to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, where she died of her injuries.

The 2-year-old child she was holding was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The extent of the child’s injuries were not disclosed.
