The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of a Chambers County jail inmate Saturday.
According to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, authorities found a female inmate unresponsive in an assigned holding cell at about 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the James Morgan County Detention Facility in LaFayette.
Deputies and medical personnel began lifesaving measures and were later joined by Lafayette Fire & EMS.
The inmate, Leanna Washington, 36, of LaGrange, Georgia, was pronounced dead. Washington, who had been in the jail since Dec. 28, 2024, was being held on drug charges from Valley police.
Sheriff Jeff Nelson requested that the SBI conduct an independent investigation.
There were no other inmates or deputies involved in this incident, Nelson said. The jail has a capacity of 256 inmates with a staff of 10 support personnel and 24 detention deputies, according to the sheriff’s website.
