Federal corrections officer in Alabama prison accused of sex with 2 female inmates

A federal prison officer in Alabama has been indicted on charges that he sexually abused to female inmates.

The two-count indictment against Bureau of Prisons Corrections Officer Robert D. Smith, according to a Thursday announcement by Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona and Assist U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Smith is accused of knowingly engaging in sexual acts with the women – identified only as T.M. and R. R.L. – who were, at the time, in official detention and under Smith’s custodial, supervisory and disciplinary authority at the Federal Correctional Institute in Aliceville in western Alabama.

According to the indictment, Smith had sexual intercourse with the woman. One of the incidents reportedly took place in 2018, and the other in 2019.

If convicted, Smith faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison on each charge, up to three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

The Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General investigated the case. Northern District of Alabama Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert O. Posey and Attorney Anna Gotfryd of the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section are prosecuting the case.
