FDA adds 2 more toxic products to large supplement recall: What you need to know
The Food and Drug Administration has expanded its recall of supplements that contain a dangerous toxin that can be fatal.
Two additional products- New Me and Vida Slim – were added to a list of 24 products that were found to contain yellow oleander, a poisonous plant native to Mexico and Central America. Issues that led to the recall date back to September 2023 when a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report found several products that listed tejocote root as an ingredient actually were made with yellow oleander.
Yellow oleander can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, cardiac changes, dysrhythmia, and more.
Additional testing showed other weight loss products marketed with names such as Crataegus Mexicana, Raiz de Tejocote, and Mexican Hawthorn may contain yellow oleander. The products were sold on individual websites, as well as thirty-party sellers like Amazon and Etsy.
Federal officials said they have received reports of adverse reactions from the products, including one serious incident.
FDA recommends anyone with these products should quit taking them and throw them away. The FDA also advises people who have taken these products to contact their healthcare provider for an evaluation.
