Fans send prayers, well wishes for legendary NASCAR driver who is ‘not doing well’
Fans and well wishers are sending prayers and support after reports legendary NASCAR driver Cale Yarborough may be ill.
John Dodson, vice president of business alliances and NASCAR at Universal Technical Institute, indicated in a tweet Yarborough, 84, was not in good health.
“The toughest race car driver I ever worked for is not doing well,” Dodson wrote. “Please keep Cale Yarborough in your prayers. The Yarborough family has asked for no phone calls or visits for now. Praying for Cale and the family.”
Yarborough was the first driver in NASCAR history to win three consecutive championships, claiming the Grand National – now the NASCAR Cup Series – title in 1976, 1977 and 1978. He won the Daytona 500 four times.
In 1979, Yarborough famously got in a fight with brothers Donnie and Bobby Allison, members of the Alabama racing gang, at the finish of the Daytona 500. The South Carolina native began racing in 1957 and called it a career in 1988.
Fans were quick to share their thoughts on the famous driver and his legacy.
“My first favorite driver. What a legend!! Praying from Georgia,” one wrote.
“Cale’s the first driver I liked, first race Ontario 1975. Met him a couple years later, he knew who I was from Hot Wheels drawings I traced and sent to fan club. We took pics and took me over and introduced me to The King as his friend. Created a lifelong fan. Get well soon Cale,” another wrote.
