Fans grade Kalen DeBoer’s first year at Alabama: ‘Not great’
Alabama fans weren’t shy Wednesday about evaluating Kalen DeBoer’s first season as the Crimson Tide coach.
Michigan’s defense sacked Jalen Milroe five times and forced three turnovers by the Alabama quarterback to lead the Wolverines to a 19-13 victory over the 11th-ranked Crimson Tide (9-4, No. 11 CFP) in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Tuesday’s loss ended Alabama’s string of 16 consecutive seasons with double-digit wins. Kalen DeBoer inherited the streak from seven-time national championship-winning coach Nick Saban, who retired after last season.
AL.com asked fans to grade the first-year’s coach for his performance.
Here is a sampling of the responses:
“Not great but i think the roster was a little over hyped, deserves to make up for it,” – David Gordon
“C. Solid at times, struggled in others. Get Nick Sheridan out, give Ty Simpson a chance, and I could see Bama winning consistently.” – Kaelyn Rose
“D-. Coaching potential is there, but that SEC aggressive coaching demeanor is missing. Cupcake coaching and being your players’ buddy all the time will get you NO WHERE. – Benjamin Boykin
“Saban went 7-6 his first season with no post season play. DeBoer went 9-4 with a bowl-eligible season. Yes, I’m frustrated just as much as the next person, and, yes, most of this roster was from the Saban era, but he’s a different type coach. That being said, give him a full season of his type recruits and players, and 2-3 full seasons to prove it. If he doesn’t he should go. But only time will tell. – Josh Mitchell
“Ima give him a lower case c- because,, umm, after yesterday, he got me questioning if he really is a winning type of coach. Nick Saban didn’t mind pulling a QB. He don’t care what ya eyes tell him. The actions spoke and if needed to make a change, then he did. DeBoer makes me feel like he will play a player no matter how bad a game is at hand and not pull.” – Shawntres Wheeler
“I wasn’t going to judge him harshly, however, with the recent revelation that Jalen Milroe has been tipping off play calls with foot placement, we all know that he’s in WAY over his head if he can’t catch a simple fix like this.
“How many teams were able to scout us and get a jump on us because of this one simple fix?
“Probably all of them.” – David Swinford
“I thought he was doing good until I realized he cared more about one player than the whole team! I guess we would have lost to Michigan in the bowl game if DeBoer would have changed QBs!!! Oh yea, that’s right we did lose to Michigan!!! DeBoer and the Offensive Coordinator get a D. The defensive coordinator gets a B plus. If the D would have had an offense to give them more rest, they probably would have gotten an A. – Galen Andrews
“He went 9-4. Saban’s first year he was 7-6. For those fans who say that Milroe should have been pulled after the first quarter, Milroe gained his composure and made the game close. DeBoer was picked by the powers at be, including Saban. If you truly believe that Saban had no hand in his successor, then you are not in tune with reality. Give him another year. He is a good coach and has won wherever he coaches. It’s SUPER difficult to follow the greatest coach of all time. You don’t fill those shoes. You have to make your own. – George Sandler
