Fan voters didn’t think Jalen Hurts was Super Bowl MVP

Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts won the Pete Rozelle Trophy for his performance in the Eagles’ 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday.

The Pete Rozelle Trophy is presented annually to the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player.

But if only fan voting had been involved, Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean would have gotten the hardware.

In fan voting on NFL.com for the Super Bowl’s MVP, DeJean was the No. 1 choice, and that was considered in selecting the award winner.

The fan voting counted 20 percent toward choosing the Super Bowl MVP. But all of that didn’t go in support of DeJean.

In the Super Bowl MVP selection, the online voting is translated into 2.5 votes for the No. 1 choice, one vote for the No. 2 choice and one-half vote for the No. 3 choice.

DeJean, Hurts and Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat finished first through third, respectively, in fan support for the MVP Award.

The other 16 votes in selecting the Super Bowl MVP include three from reporters covering the AFC team, three from reporters covering the NFC team, three from at-large media members, two from presidents of the Pro Football Writers of America, two from PFWA pool reporters, two from Super Bowl broadcasters and one from a home-market reporter.

Hurts won the vote and went to Disney World on Monday.

During Super Bowl LIX, Hurts completed 17-of-22 passes for 221 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and ran for 72 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries.

A rookie, DeJean made three tackles, intercepted one pass and returned three punts for 27 yards. He returned the interception 38 yards for a touchdown as Philadelphia took a 17-0 lead with 7:03 left in the first half.

Sweat made six tackles and recorded 2.5 sacks of Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Sunday.

“I should’ve had it,” Sweat told the Philadelphia Enquirer about the Super Bowl MVP Award. “I could’ve had it. It’s all good, though.”

Hurts became the third former Alabama quarterback to win the Super Bowl MVP Award. Bart Starr of the Green Bay Packers won the award for each of the first two Super Bowls. Joe Namath of the New York Jets won the award for Super Bowl III.
