Family sought for 3 men who died recently in Birmingham

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding family members of three men who died recently in Jefferson County.

Their bodies are ready to be released for burial, but the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has not been able to locate and notify relatives.

Matthew Lee Gilmer, 37, was found dead July 26.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Gilmer was homeless and found unresponsive under the Elton B. Stephens Expressway bridge at 4:41 p.m. that Friday. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The cause of death is pending but Yates said there was no evidence of trauma or foul play.

Gilmer’s last known address was in the 100 block of 14th Street North in Birmingham. He also had previous addresses in Center Point and Leeds.

Lee Campbell Lewis, 56, died Aug. 1.

He was a resident at Oak Knoll Health and Rehabilitation and under the care of Expect Care Hospice. He died of natural causes.

Yates said Lewis is believed to originally be from Longview, Texas.

He has past addresses Pelham, Hoover, Alabaster, Vestavia, Ashville, Shelby, Indian Springs, Wilsonville, and Harpersville in Alabama, and in Nashville and Centerville, Georgia.

George Alton Walker, 47, was found dead at 6:50 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, in the 1800 block of Seventh Avenue North.

He was discovered by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service unresponsive on a sidewalk across from Fire Station #1.

The cause of his death is pending, but Yates said there was no sign of trauma or foul play.

Walker listed multiple addresses in Anniston dating back to 1998.  Possible family ties were found to individuals living in numerous cities across the country, but all efforts to locate them have failed.
