Family plans to revive beloved Trussville Italian restaurant
More than a decade after it closed, Trussville residents still have fond memories of Dick Tamburro’s Italian restaurant off Glenn Avenue.
Now, his family is planning to rekindle those memories with a new eatery, aiming for a mid-August opening.
Tamburro’s Italian Home will be located at 5951 Chalkville Mountain Rd. in the Trussville Shopping Center.
Kyleen Kramer, Tamburro’s daughter, and her sister-in-law, Tina Tamburro, will operate the restaurant. Dick Tamburro, who learned how to make Italian sausage from his grandfather, operated the former restaurant with his sons until he retired about 2010.
Kramer said she would have loved to keep things going at the time.
“But we still had kids to put through college,” she said.
Tamburro’s, also known as Tamburro’s & Sons, or Tamburro’s Bella Notte, was located in a porchlined, white house. Diners sampled dishes in small but uncramped dining rooms, with green and white tile floors and wine-colored walls. Dick Tamburro might stroll past the table, playing a Dean Martin standard on the accordion.
For the new restaurant, the two are planning a menu similar to the classic Italian Tamburro’s experience, with a few new wrinkles, such as pizza.
“We’d like to do cannolis, only smaller ones,” Kramer said. “We’re thinking about seasonal cannolis, like pumpkin in the fall, strawberry at Valentine’s Day.”
Kramer worked for an Atlanta law firm for 20 years before deciding it was time for something new.
“I told my husband I wanted to open a restaurant, and here we are,” she said. “We just want to continue the legacy. My dad is such a likeable guy. People are just drawn to him, and we want to continue that with great food. We’d like to promote a strong family business.”
