Family of man killed in dispute over DoorDash debt launches GoFundMe

The family of a man killed in a dispute with his cousin over money is asking for help with his burial and care for his three children.

Darius Deshawn Brooks was killed Tuesday in the driveway of his grandfather’s Bessemer home. His first cousin, 22-year-old Jordan Brooks, is charged with murder.

About 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to the 700 block of Parker Road on a report of a person shot. They arrived to find Darius Brooks lying in a driveway suffering from multiple gunshots wounds.

Bessemer police Lt. Christian Clemons said Bessemer Fire medics treated Darius Brooks, but he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Based on information they obtained from the scene, officers located Jordan Brooks in the 800 block of Fourth Ave S.W. He was taken into custody there, and investigators recovered the gun believed to be used in the fatal shooting.

Clemons said the cousins both lived with their grandfather, but Jordan Brooks was preparing to move out. The cousins, he said, got into an argument because Jordan Brooks owed Darius Brooks money from a DoorDash order. Neither man worked for DoorDash.

Jordan Brooks was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Wednesday.

“My brother was getting off work and walked into a nightmare,’’ wrote Brian Brooks in a GoFundMe. “Pure envy and jealousy. “

“My brother recently moved to Birmingham from Michigan to provide a better life for his family, Brian Brooks wrote. “He leaves behind 3 beautiful kids and due to recently starting a new job had no life insurance.”
