Family of locksmith killed in Birmingham over payment dispute seeks help with funeral costs

The family of a 36-year-old locksmith fatally shot during a dispute with a customer over money is asking for help to bury him.

Darnell Michael Puidokas, who leaves behind a 12-year-old son, was killed Saturday night in the parking lot of a west Birmingham Chevron. A 62-year-old man – Michael Kermit Murray – is charged with murder in the death of Puidokas.

A GoFundMe has been started to help with Puidokas’s burial and other expenses.

“Our beloved Darnell was shot and killed this week while doing his job as a locksmith, over a price dispute,’’ according to the GoFundMe. “We’re all shocked and heartbroken that he was taken from us like that at a sudden moment.”

The ordeal began Saturday evening when Puidokas performed a key service for Murray at one location.

Then, according to Puidokas’s family, both Murray and Puidokas had driven to the Chevron on Bessemer Road for Murray to use an ATM to get money to pay the locksmith.

It was there they got into an argument over the price.

Puidokas, who was from Michigan but currently lived in Birmingham, slapped Murray who then shot Puidokas, the victim’s family said.

The victim’s mother, Michelle Puidokas, said her god son was on the phone with Puidokas throughout the job, the argument and the shooting.

She said Murray went into the gas station to get the money and then came out but was short of what her son had told him the job would cost.

“Instead of handing my son the money, he tells my son, ‘Hand me the receipt,’’’ Michelle Puidokas said. “My son said, ‘I’m not handing you no receipt until you give me my money.’’’

It escalated from there, she said.

“The sad thing is my god son was begging him to leave and take the loss,’’ she said. “It was a $200 job.”

“He heard the gunshots and everything,’’ she said, “and then Darnell’s phone went dead.”

West Precinct officers were dispatched to the scene at 6:10 p.m. Saturday and Puidokas was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m.

Murray remained on the scene and called 911. He was taken to police headquarters where he was questioned by detectives and then booked into the Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour hold.

Detectives presented the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office which issued the murder warrant Monday morning.

Friends and family said the fundraiser is to help with the expenses of the funeral expenses and memorial. Any money that is left will be used for a memorial for him and to any other expenses involved.

“I am so devastated and crushed. I can’t believe I lost my baby to senseless gunfire,’’ his mother, Michelle Puidokas said. “All just for trying to do his job. My baby is a genuine guy, he didn’t deserve to go out like this. Our lives will never be the same.”
