Family members sought for 3 men who died recently in Birmingham

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding family members of three men who died recently in Jefferson County.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the men as Bobby Lee Cook, 62, Willie James McCurdy, 81, and William Loyce Watts, also 81.

Their bodies are ready to be released for burial, but coroner’s officials have not been able to find their next of kin.

Cook, a Black male, was found dead Nov. 28 in his motel room in the 1300 block of Third Avenue North.

Staff found him while performing a welfare check on him. There was no sign of trauma or foul play.

Authorities said his mother, Bertha Williams, once lived in Pittsburg.

McCurdy, a Black male, died Dec. 2 of natural causes while a patient at UAB Hospital.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said little information is known about McCurdy.

William Loyce Watts

Watts, a white male, lived in Clanton.

He died Nov. 25 of natural causes while he was a patient at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Watts once lived in Maplesville and in the Robinwood Community near Birmingham. He possibly has a brother by the name of James Watts.
