Fairfield man charged in double homicide that killed rapper Landlord Lo, Midfield man

A Fairfield man is charged is charged in the shooting deaths of two men during a repass one week ago today in Brighton.

James David Abercrombie III, 27, is charged with capital murder for the killings of two or more people in the Dec. 13 slayings D’Angelo Le’Marcus Samuel, 27, also known as rapper Landlord Lo, and Roderick Hall, 38, of Midfield.

Abercrombie, who has a lengthy criminal history including a robbery conviction, is also charged with certain persons being in possession of a firearm and several shooting into a building charges.

The deadly shooting happened that Friday following the funeral for Samuel’s uncle, 62-year-old Fredrick Lee Samuel.

Authorities were called to the Brighton Community Center, at 3810 7th Ave., shortly before 2:30 p.m.

Samuel, Hall, and at least one other man, were standing just outside the front door when the shooting happened.

Samuel and Hall were pronounced dead under the awning at the community center’s entrance.

According to law enforcement radio, one was shot in the eye and the other was shot in the head.

Cries of family members could be heard coming from the crime scene.

Abercrombie was booked into the Jefferson County Jail today at 9:52 a.m. He is being held without bond.

A motive has not been disclosed but the victims were killed with a rifle, according to charging documents.

Video of killing was shared on social media and showed the suspect shooting the victims from just feet away before running the community center parking lot, still armed with the rifle.

Brighton police Capt. Kenneth Hooten, who is also the city’s assistant fire chief, was among the first responders on the scene.

Hooten said he’d known Hall since elementary school and described him as a “down to earth guy.”

“He didn’t bother anybody,’’ Hooten said.

“I went to elementary school with him before I became a cop or a firefighter, hung out, and we’d check in on each other from time to me,’’ Hooten said.

When they would run into each other, Hall would always ask Hooten if he needed anything. “You need anything, all you gotta do is ask,’’ he would tell Hooten.

Hall would also tell Hooten that he was proud of him.

Samuel performed under the name Landlord Lo. In 2020, the rapper teamed up with Pooh Shiesty in the “Chance” video that garnered more than 1.7 million views.

Samuel was 18 when he was arrested and charged with murder for the shooting death of 23-year-old reputed drug dealer Kevin Hatter. The shooting happened in the 1200 block of 47th Street in Brighton about 6 p.m. on April 8, 2015.

Hatter had faced drug and attempted murder charges before his death.

Samuel’s attorney at the time claimed self-defense, and a jury in 2018 acquitted Samuel of the murder charge.

Another suspect in Hatter’s slaying had his case dismissed that same year.

Samuel was also indicted earlier this year on charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm into occupied vehicle in connection with the 2020 shooting of a woman.

Those cases were dismissed after the victim recanted.

Two months ago, Samuel was interviewed by The Family TV on YouTube titled Beats & Bullets: The Alabama Rapper Who Lived to Tell His Story, in which he talked about his music, past criminal charges, and other Birmingham area homicides.
