Facebook settlement: How to apply for money from $725 million class-action suit

A federal judge has given tentative approval for an agreement between Facebook’s parent company, Meta, and lawyers representing plaintiffs in multiple class-action lawsuits.

The suits stem from the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, though Meta denies allegations it shared user data with third parties without permission, the Los Angeles Times reported. Despite the denials, Meta has agreed to pay $725 million to settle the cases.

Final approval hasn’t been given but U.S. Facebook users can now file claims. How much you can collect will depend on how much attorneys are paid, how many users file and how many years you’ve used Facebook.

What to know about the settlement

The settlement covers anyone in the U.S. who had an account on the social media network between May 24, 2007 to Dec. 22, 2022. Each person can only file one claim, even if they have multiple Facebook accounts.

You can file by filing out an online form or downloading the online form and mailing it to Facebook Consumer Privacy User Profile Litigation, c/o Settlement Administrator, 1650 Arch Street, Suite 2210, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

To file, you’ll need your Facebook user name or phone number or email of your account. You will also have to provide your contact information and select a choice of payment  – prepaid MasterCard, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or check.

Exactly how much you will receive remains to be seen. The amount will depend on how much is taken to cover attorney fees, how many people submit valid claims and how long you were on Facebook in the period covered by the settlement.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the proposed settlement would give 25% of the fund to the plaintiffs’ attorneys for legal fees, plus an unspecified amount for legal expenses. That will leave less than $544 million to be split among those who file a claim.

The deadline for submitting a claim is Aug. 25 11:59 p.m. Pacific time.
