Explaining the competition Alabama football offensive line has each week

The Alabama football offensive line competes each week to see who can register the most knockdown blocks.

Chris Kapilovic, who coaches the position, started doing it about 12-15 years ago, Kapilovic estimated. He’s kept track of the knockdowns and talked about them, but everything changed when the veteran coach put together a physical tracker of the competition.

“Once I put a board up on the wall, or I write it down every week, and I might have a special reward for a guy that week,” Kapilovic said, “it’s amazing how much more competitive it is.”

Right guard Jaeden Roberts won it this past week, Kapilovic said.

So what’s on the line exactly? What does the winner each week receive?

“I’ve got a couple nice chains I’ve made for the guys,” Kapilovic said. “They like to wear those things. It’s probably, above all else, it’s not the reward. It’s the pride factor.”

Alabama (4-0, 1-0 SEC) is set to face Vanderbilt (2-2, 0-1) on Saturday (3:15 p.m. CT, SEC Network) in Nashville.

The Crimson Tide has been able to play the last two games with a fully healthy offensive line, and it has been effective with (left to right) Kadyn Proctor, Tyler Booker, Parker Brailsford, Roberts and Elijah Pritchett.
