Expanded College Football Playoff will include some midweek games, reports say

When the College Football Playoff expands for the 2024 season, the 12-team bracket will include some midweek games in order to avoid the NFL playoffs.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that CFP executive director Bill Hancock confirmed the news to reporters on Thursday, after the Playoff Executive Committee met in Dallas. College football will continue to operate under the four-team playoff format this fall before expanding in 2024.

According to Thursday’s news, the first round of the 2024 playoff will begin during the third week in December. That round will include one game on Friday and three on Saturday, with the Saturday games up against a handful of NFL regular-season games.

As previously reported, the first-round games will take place at campus sites, with the No. 5 seed hosting No. 12, No. 6 hosting No. 11, No. 7 hosting No. 10 and No. 8 hosting No. 9. Seeds 1-4 will receive byes to the quarterfinal round, which will incorporate the existing “New Year’s Six” bowls (Sugar, Peach, Rose and Fiesta in 2024) and take place on New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and/or Jan. 2.

The semifinals — the Orange and Cotton Bowls in 2024 — will take place during the second week of January. Those games will take place during the “midweek” (presumably Thursday) in order to avoid the NFL’s wildcard playoff weekend.

The 2024-25 College Football Playoff National Championship Game is expected to take place on Jan. 20, 2025. Atlanta’s Mercedes Benz Stadium has already been selected as the site of that game.
