Exhibition of ‘Downton Abbey’ finery coming to Mobile Museum of History
The fashions of “Downton Abbey” are coming to the History Museum of Mobile in early 2023.
The exhibition “Dressing the Abbey” will open Jan. 28, museum director Meg McCrummen Fowler announced Wednesday morning. The exhibition will feature “35 costumes worn by the men and women in the ‘Downton Abbey’ series,” Fowler said, and the exhibits will “invite viewers to discover the turbulence of the Edwardian era and the impact of the first world war.”
“From rich country tweeds to beautiful evening gowns to starched footmen’s liveries, the costumes in the exhibition speak to a transformational moment in world history,” Fowler said. “In this exhibition the delicate laces and long hemlines of the Edwardian era transform after World War I into the clean geometric lines of the 1920s. … Visitors will see how evolving styles both reflect and shape ideas about society and culture, manners and history.”
A complimentary exhibition will draw on the museum’s 117,000-item permanent collection to show what Mobilians were wearing in the same time frame, Fowler said.
Fowler said more information will be forthcoming about details of the 12-week exhibition and related special events such as high teas. “We work hard to be good partners with our downtown neighbors,” she said. “For this exhibition we are partnering with a variety of local businesses to host all sorts of programming that will enrich the visitors’ experience.”
She also hinted strongly that the museum, which had record attendance of more than 31,000 visitors in fiscal 2020-2021, is on track to announce a 2021-22 count that “blows last year’s numbers out of the water.”
Developed by Exhibits Development Group, the exhibition involves costumes and other artifacts created by Cosprop Ltd., a London-based costume house. Cosprop provided costumes for “Downtown Abbey” and two of its designers won Emmy Awards for their work on the show.
