Ex-Navy swimmer charged with trying to drown Florida security guard
An Illinois resident and former Navy rescue swimmer is charged with attempted murder, accused of trying to drown a security guard at a condominium on Okaloosa Island in Florida, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
Seth Beavers, 33, of Mt. Sterling, Ill., is held in the Okaloosa County Jail with bail set at $200,000 while he awaits an initial court appearance.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were called to the condominium on Santa Rosa Boulevard about 10:15 p.m. Friday.
The security guard told deputies that Beavers was in the pool after its posted hours. The guard asked Beavers to leave, but instead Beavers instigated a confrontation and threatened to drown the guard, according to the sheriff’s report.
The guard said Beavers forced him into the pool, held him against his will, struck him in the head and then pushed him under the water, according to the report. The victim said he could not swim.
The guard managed to escape Beavers momentarily, according to the sheriff’s office, but Beavers struck him again, wrapped his arm around the guard’s neck and pulled him down, fully submerging his head under water “as if trying to purposefully drown him.”
The guard, who has not been identified, told deputies he thought he was going to die.
The Associated Press reported that Beavers told investigators the guard tried to hit him, with Beavers reportedly admitting to pulling the guard into the pool, holding him underwater and striking him four times. He also admitted to telling the guard he was going to drown him, the AP reported.
Investigators say Beavers is charged with attempted murder because his actions could have resulted in the guard’s death. He was booked into the Okaloosa County Jail at 4:34 a.m. Saturday and remained there as of Monday morning.
Beavers’ LinkedIn page indicates he served in the U.S. Navy for six years as a Naval Aircrewman Tactical Helicopter Operator, specializing as a “rescue swimmer, door gunner, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance.”
Beavers current employment is listed as a salesman for a payroll and human resources company.
