Ex-boyfriend of slain Montgomery police detective receives life sentence
The ex-boyfriend of a Montgomery police detective who was shot and killed three years ago during an apparent domestic dispute was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of capital murder, court records showed.
Brandon Deshawn Webster, 28, of Montgomery, will have no chance at parole under the deal he struck with Montgomery County prosecutors.
The murder charges were capital offenses because Montgomery police Det. Tanisha Pughsley had an order of protection against Webster and the slaying was committed during a burglary, records showed.
Webster also pleaded guilty to an attempted assault charge for firing multiple shots at another victim during Pughsley’s murder.
Pughsley, 27, was with the department since 2016 and was a criminal justice graduate of Alabama State University.
She was found with a gunshot wound in the 6700 block of Overview Drive on July 6, 2020. Police at the time said her slaying appeared to be connected to a domestic incident.
Court records show Pughsley in late May 2020 filed for a protection from abuse order against Webster, which a judge granted in June. In that request, Pughsley documented and incident that happened May 19, 2020 at her home. “”Brandon came to my residence and hit me in the side of my head with an open hand two times while I was holding my 5-month-old Godchild,’’ she wrote. “His actions caused me to drop the infant.”
“Although Brandon has moved out of the residence, he continues to show up and physically assault me,’’ she wrote. “He sends threatening text messages and once he is blocked, he continues to call my phone private.”
