Ex-Blount County teacher, coach accused of sex with student in classroom, athletic field house

A former Oneonta schools coach and teacher arrested last year amid accusations he solicited naked photos from a high school student has now been indicted on new charges.

A Blount County grand jury indicted 30-year-old Luis Vazquez on seven counts of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student, District Attorney Pamela Casey announced Tuesday. He is also charged with tampering with evidence.

Vazquez was a science teacher at Oneonta Middle School and a soccer coach. He was also previously listed as the head coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams at the high school

Vazquez last year was among several soccer coaches named Coach of the Year by the Alabama High School Athletic Association boys’ soccer coaches.

Vazquez was initially arrested in August on a Class A misdemeanor of electronic solicitation of a student by a school employee.

The new charges accuse Vazquez of having sex acts with the student on multiple occasions in a classroom, the athletic field house and in a home, according to the indictment.

Vazquez resigned after his initial arrest.

He was booked back into the Blount County Jail on the new charges earlier this morning.

Casey said the indictments followed an extensive investigation. She praised the work of Blount County sheriff’s Investigator Edward Hull and the Blount County Children’s Center in the case.

The investigation by the Blount County Sheriff’s Office began July 19, 2024, when school officials notified investigators about a possible inappropriate relationship between a teacher and a student.

A search warrant was carried out on Vazquez’s cell phone as part of the investigation, Moon said in a Wednesday press conference.

During an interview with investigators, he admitted to an inappropriate relationship with a student who was under his authority, authorities said.

Vazquez joined Oneonta Middle School in 2021 as a seventh-grade science teacher and a soccer coach for the varsity boys’ and girls’ teams.

Vazquez grew up in Oneonta and graduated from high school in 2014. He then played soccer at Shorter University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in psychology.

Casey asked anyone with additional information, or any additional victims, to contact Hull at the sheriff’s office.
