Ex-Big Ten quarterback heading to SEC in bizarre ‘trade,’ reports say

In what amounts to a quarterback “trade,” former UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar is transferring to Tennessee, according to multiple reports.

Aguilar was displaced at UCLA by former Volunteers quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who signed with the Bruins on Sunday. A day later, Aguilar entered the transfer portal and committed to Iamaleava’s old school.

Aguilar, a former junior-college transfer, spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons at Appalachian State. The fifth-year senior totaled 6,760 yards and 56 touchdowns in two seasons, but also threw 24 interceptions.

It was widely reported that Iamaleava — who left Tennessee after an alleged dispute over his NIL payments — took a “pay cut” to sign with UCLA. That won’t be the case for Aguilar with the Volunteers, according to a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Iamaleava passed for 2,616 yards and 19 touchdowns as a first-time starter in 2024, leading Tennessee to a 10-3 record and a berth in the College Football Playoff. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
