Ex-Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind worker charged with student sex abuse

A former employee of the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind was jailed last week on sodomy and other charges involving a student, according to court records.

Robert Charles Godbold, 38, of Talladega, allegedly committed the abuse with a student younger than 13 between May and June, according to the complaint filed against him Friday in Talladega County District Court.

While the complaint did not state where Godbold worked, the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind said on social media Friday that it was notified that “a former employee has been charged with criminal sexual activity with a student enrolled at Alabama School for the Deaf” in Talladega.

Godbold was taken to the Talladega County Jail last Thursday charges of sodomy and engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student, jail records showed. He was released Friday after posting $100,000 bond.

The institute, which said the alleged abuse did not occur on school property, said it was first told of the allegations on Sept. 26. That day, it put Godbold on administrative leave. He now no longer works there.

The organization also informed local authorities and the state Human Resources and Education Departments of the allegations.

“AIDB cooperated fully with the investigations by law enforcement and Alabama Department of Human Resources, and will continue to fully cooperate with those agencies as requested,” the institute said. “AIDB will provide ongoing counseling and support to any student or staff requesting it.”
