Ex-Alabama high school performance arts teacher charged with sexual involvement with students

An Alabama high school performance arts teacher who resigned earlier this month was arrested Thursday for allegedly engaging in sexual acts and other offenses with students, authorities said.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force arrested Madison resident Nicholas James Murphy around 9:04 a.m. Thursday, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.

Murphy, a performance arts teacher at Ardmore High School who resigned on Jan. 13, was charged with two counts of school employee engaged in sexual contact with a student, two counts of school employee engaged in a sexual act with a student and two counts of school employee soliciting obscene material, the sheriff’s office said.

He was released from the Madison County jail after posting $70,000 bond, records showed.

Murph’s arrest came after a joint investigation by Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations.

“This investigation is an example of the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies to combat online child exploitation and bring perpetrators to justice,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is committed to protecting children from online exploitation and ensuring that those who engage in such behavior are held accountable.”

The sheriff’s office encouraged anyone with information on online child exploitation to contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).
