Ex-Alabama high school football coach charged with statutory rape of Tennessee student

A former Alabama high school coach was jailed in Tennessee on charges of statutory rape involving a high school student there.

Chris Cagle, 55, of Toney, used to coach football at Sparkman High School in Harvest. He resigned after three seasons.

On Wednesday, he was booked into the Lincoln County, Tennessee jail on four counts of statutory rape by an authority figure, Tennessee 17th Judicial District Attorney Robert Carter told WHNT.

Cagle was released after posting $40,000 bond.

Cagle was a driver’s ed teacher and football coach at Fayetteville High School in Tennessee. He resigned from the school district amid an investigation.

Carter said the charges stem from allegations Cagle had an inappropriate relationship with a student.

The incident remained under investigation Wednesday.
