Everything Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said about his win over Auburn
Known for often making attention-grabbing comments, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin had an even-keeled press conference following his No. 13-ranked team’s 28-21 win Saturday night over Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Here is a full transcript of everything Kiffin said after the game:
Opening statement…
“Alright, I’m just really pleased with our players, happy for our fans. I don’t care what records are going into it, this place at night is a hard place to play. Look at percentages, a lot of people lose in here. For our guys to take over in the second half and really the last play of the third quarter and the fourth quarter was awesome. We talked all week about this season we’ve been a really good fourth-quarter team, second-half team. We had to do it again. That was good to see.
I thought our defense, really the last drive obviously was bad and the one run, but besides that, I think five first downs in the whole game. That’s really impressive defense to play on the road.
We said all week you gotta pack your run game, pack your defense to come in here and win and we did that. The players did that today. Really good to see. We overcame adversity and strange things that happened here like our backup punter not getting the snap and then throwing an interception. Guys overcame some stuff today which was good.”
On his message to Ole Miss’ offense when it didn’t score in the second and most of the third quarter…
“Just stay the course, things will pop. We were being a little conservative just by the way that our defense was playing. That’s going to put you in some third downs and we didn’t convert on third downs. We were really poor on third down today. If you’re taking three, four yards, you gotta make those third downs.
Those guys did a really good job on third down. They played a lot of man, brought a lot of pressure and we didn’t make them pay for it. Credit to those guys, too. I said all week they got really good defense players, especially really good DBs.”
On what it says about his team that Ole Miss won at Jordan-Hare Stadium…
“It’s 71 years or something since Ole Miss won two games in a row against these guys. This place, I don’t have the numbers in front of me, is a hard place to play at night. It’s always a hard place to play in general. They believe they are going to win. We’ve been in here at night before and didn’t win with a good team. It was a great day for that to happen.”
On holding back-to-back SEC opponents to under 300 yards, first time since 2009 for Ole Miss…
“First, credit to the players for making plays, DBs made big plays today. Got some turnovers. Then you gotta give (defensive coordinator) Pete Golding some credit. He took a lot of heat, just like our defense did after the LSU game. He’s come back and like I said, played a couple of our best defensive games since we’ve been here or in a long time, really. It’s awesome.”
On wide receiver Jordan Watkins playing through an injury…
“That just shows you who he is. This guy had two plates put in his hand 11 days ago or something like that, still has stitches. He wanted to play. I did not think he’d play. Obviously, he didn’t do anything all week. Then this morning he’s like, ‘I can catch.’ And he went out and caught with the cast on. Obviously, we still didn’t use him very much, but that says a lot for a guy really with one hand that you put him back in this environment to catch punts.”
On the importance of opening a game on the road with a touchdown drive…
“Overcoming adversity, especially early like that. We were moving the ball but hurting ourselves with the penalties. That was great to see. We got help with one penalty on them, also. But I thought Jaxson (Dart) had one really bad throw, behind Zakhari (Franklin) and ends up as an interception. We had momentum then. And outside of that, I think he played a really good game. We didn’t ask him to throw a lot. We knew that they basically double-team the slots. So there is going to be chances to scramble because there is nobody left when they match it. And he made some big scrambles. Did a good job.”
On a big game for wide receiver Tre Harris…
“Tre did a great job. He played a position he’s never played. He played Jordan’s (Watkins) position, he played the slot. We actually flipped him when their corner got hurt. Put him out there on the backup corner for the fade. When that guy came in, quarterback made a good throw and he made a big play, which was a game-changing play.”
On running back Quinshon Judkins playing close to home at Auburn…
“I think he’s always had something against this state going back to Troy when we played them and how angry he ran. That was awesome to see him play that well and play really physical and have a mindset like that in practice all week.”
On the improvement of the running game…
“I wasn’t worried, but not quite as worried as everybody else. We’ve just always been able to run the ball eventually. Maybe a game or two not. But I think we were fourth in the SEC coming in after a really slow start. I think that both running backs did a really good job. The line did a good job and we got out of here with a win.
I know our fans don’t like these one-score wins and the anxiety with them. So that’s why I let them score there at the end, just to give the fans some anxiety.”
On if these are the types of days for his defense Kiffin expected when he hired Pete Golding…
“I didn’t know how fast it would happen. I’ve known for years, and I’ve never even coached with him, but I’ve known for years what people say about him going back to his first interview with (Alabama head coach Nick) Saban. People in the room said Saban said that’s the most impressive interview he’s ever seen and that was a young defensive guy and there have been some really good interview guys that he’s hired. I didn’t know I’d ever have a chance to get him. It just worked out and it was awesome. We’re seeing it pay off. That was a really big investment that was made. I think everybody is happy right now.”
On what’s changed defensively over the last few games…
“Well, remember we played LSU. LSU does that to everybody. They can make you look really like the Bama/Georgia great defenses those years, they can make you look really bad. So, fixed some things but also didn’t change everything just because you got two elite receivers and a phenomenal quarterback.
We played really good a lot of times on defense over the course of the year, even early.”
On quieting the Jordan-Hare Stadium crowd…
“I think the game, in my opinion, energy changed on the score on the last play of the third quarter. They’ve got that big show and everything between the third and fourth quarter. When things aren’t going good, that show can be intimidating. But the fact that we had just scored and taken some air out of this stadium I think was a huge play right there as we went into the fourth quarter.”
