Before Auburn takes the field Monday at the Woltosz Football Performance Center, Freeze met with the media at approximately 3:30 p.m. to review Friday’s scrimmage, discuss the development of the Tigers’ quarterbacks and look toward the week ahead. Below is a blow-by-blow recap of Freeze’s remarks.
HUGH FREEZE
— On the progress of the QBs the last week: “We got better last week.” They added a few additional periods of just teaching the “base fundamental things” of how the offense should be run. Friday’s scrimmage was hard to judge, he says.
— QBs “took a step forward” last week. Freeze says Holden Geriner really stood out and “his grasp of what we’re trying to do” was impressive.
— Robby Ashford was nursing a sore shoulder last week, so he was unable to throw Wednesday and just sparingly Friday after having his best practice of the spring on Monday.
— On freshman offensive lineman Connor Lew, Freeze says they “hit a home run,” adds that he will be playing as a freshman. He’s working at guard and center.
— Lew being able to play early, Freeze says, is also “an indictment of where we are.”
— On “the vibe” around the program, Freeze says he was visiting with a national reporter today and says that “truthfully, every place our staff has gone, they’ve been able to create an excitement and buzz around recruiting.”
— On the progress of the wide receivers: “Not as much as I would like.” Handful of hamstring and ankle injuries that have kept a few “key” receivers out, including during the scrimmage on Friday. Still have improvement to be done with alignment, assignment and technique. Hopes to get guys back Wednesday.
— Freeze says he has to balance how to truthfully assess the quarterbacks when speaking publicly. Believes there has been improvement, but also doesn’t want to hide the fact that the position had a lot of concerns when he took over the program. “I’m not down on them. They’ve all done some good things. They’ve all had some inconsistencies. It’s our job to improve that.”
— Freeze says the offensive linemen that Auburn brought in this offseason “absolutely improved us.” Whether it’s enough to make a difference this fall remains to be seen.
— “We are open to the portal business for anyone who fits our culture at Auburn and can help us improve our team quickly.”
