Everything Auburn’s Hugh Freeze said during his Monday morning press conference
Hugh Freeze and the Auburn football team were likely forced to spend some time gazing into the mirror after Saturday’s 48-18 loss on the road at No. 22 LSU on Saturday.
After having two weeks to prepare for LSU, Auburn’s offense still sputtered against a far-from-elite defense, while Auburn’s defense allowed LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels to look like the Heisman candidate Freeze said he was.
It was a tough time in Baton Rouge and Freeze and the Tigers (3-3, 0-3 SEC) are likely relieved to get back to Jordan-Hare Stadium for another 6 p.m. kickoff — this time against Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels (5-1, 2-1 SEC).
Here’s everything Freeze said during his press conference Monday morning as he put a bookend to Saturday’s loss to LSU and looks ahead to Saturday’s game vs. Ole Miss:
— “Obviously we’d like to put Saturday night behind us as fast as possible,” Hugh Freeze said to open the press conference. Freeze added that Auburn lacked drive and competitive spirit in Saturday’s loss, which he takes responsibility for.
— “We’ve got a lot to learn from that game and certainly no time to hang our heads or feel sorry for ourselves because we’ve got another team very much like (LSU) coming in,” Freeze said as he looks ahead to Saturday night’s game vs. Ole Miss.
— “Heck yeah, it’ll make you sad when you’re not competing,” Freeze said of his emotions towards the end of Saturday’s game. Says he’s not sure anger is the right response. “I certainly wasn’t happy… I definitely was not happy.”
— On playing at Ole Miss when he was at Liberty: “I think it’s helpful,” Freeze said. Adds that it was an emotional day when he returned to Oxford and he believes having those initial feelings that come with a homecoming out of the way will be helpful.
— “In building a program, you hope you don’t have to revisit that,” Freeze said when asked about how he motivates the team after losses. “We should play for each other, we should love each other, we should serve each other.”
— On possible personnel changes on offense: “It’s well-documented, we’ve been inconsistent.” Says there were four possessions that Auburn had vs. LSU that the offense could’ve brought Auburn within one possession, but Auburn only got a field goal out of all four of them. “Awful start, I don’t think that helped. We looked like zombies a bit on the sideline after that. It kind of snowballed.”
— “No earth-shaking personnel changes,” Freeze said of the offense.
— “We consider everything and everybody, so that’ll continue to be in our thoughts,” Freeze said when asked if he’s considered giving Robby Ashford more snaps under center.
— “I probably wouldn’t be sitting here today if not for tempo offense and RPO world, so it’s very uncomfortable for me to not be in that world,” Freeze said when asked about using tempo on offense. Adds that Auburn being thin due to injuries takes a lot of that tempo away. “We’re still kind of debating that.”
— “That is baffling to me and I don’t have an answer,” Freeze said when asked about the two pre-snap penalties early against LSU. “Thought they heard a clap, but there was no clap.”
— On Payton Thorne’s evaluation after LSU: “It’s not just the quarterback that makes the passing game go. It’s the protection, the routes… It’s a combination, but the passing game is still inconsistent.”
— On injuries: “It doesn’t look good for Damari (Alston).” Adds that Jaylin Simpson wasn’t 100% on Saturday and that they’re hoping to get some news back on Keionte Scott before too much longer.
— On the quarterback rotation: “I would expect that you’d see both QBs.”
— “I think our team has competed hard every game other than times the other night,” Freeze said of Auburn’s competitiveness Saturday night. “It seemed flat. It did. But again, you don’t make too much of that out of one game. If you have three or four in a row like that, then you take issue.”
— On Ole Miss’ offense: “They’re similar (to LSU),” Freeze said. “They want to go fast all the time. They do a few more things in the run game than LSU… I hadn’t watched too much of their defense yet, I’ll do that this afternoon. But my guys said they’re playing extremely hard… I think they’ve got a complete team.”
— “Absolutely. I hope,” Freeze said when asked if he hopes to run a high-tempo offense at Auburn when he gets the roster where he likes it.
