‘Ever seen a dead body?’ Girl, 14, called friend after shooting mom, Mississippi cops say

An investigator testified during a preliminary hearing that a 14-year-old Mississippi girl accused of killing her mother called a friend to come over and see her mother’s dead body, according to WLBT in Jackson, Miss.

Carly Gregg has been charged as an adult in the murder of her mother, high school teacher Ashley Smylie, and the attempted murder of her stepfather, Heath Smylie, in their home in the Jackson suburb of Brandon, Miss.

During the hearing, Rankin County (Miss.) investigator Zachary Cotton said an interior security camera in the Smylie’s home captured footage of Gregg walking into her mother’s bedroom, with her hands concealed behind her back.

“You hear a gunshot, a scream, followed by two more gunshots,” Cotton said, according to the TV station.

Ashley Smylie was shot twice in the face, once under the chin, an autopsy found.

While she waited for her stepfather’s arrival — about 45 minutes — Gregg invited a friend over.

“Carly asked her if she had ever seen a dead body before,” Cotton testified. “She proceeded to show her deceased mother, who was in the bedroom, and showed the gun that she used to shoot her mom.”

The interior camera had been removed by the time Heath Smylie arrived at the house. Investigators later found it in the refrigerator, according to the report.

When Heath Smylie arrived, Gregg shot him once, but he was able to take the gun away. She fled the scene, but was captured about 30 minutes later.

Cotton also said Gregg was taking medications for the treatment of depression and anxiety and those medications had been changed in the days prior to the shootings.

Gregg’s bond was set at $1 million. Cotton testified that as he prepared Gregg’s bond paperwork, she said: “Oh, you can kill somebody and pay a lot of money and get out of jail.”

Gregg’s attorneys asked for lower bond, but the judge refused, saying she posed a “special danger to others,” according to the report. She has also been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
