Eufaula schools close Monday after 15-year-old reportedly shot to death

Eufaula City Schools announced school will be closed on Monday and Tuesday after the reported shooting death of a teen over the weekend.

The Eufaula Police Department in a Facebook post Sunday night said, “an active shooting investigation is ongoing at this time.”

No additional details were released by police, but Barbour County Sheriff Tyrone Smith told a Montgomery television station that a 15-year-old was shot and killed Sunday in Eufaula.

Almost simultaneously, Eufaula City Schools announced on its social media accounts that classes and extracurricular activities are canceled Monday and Tuesday.

“Due to the tragic events that have occurred in our community this afternoon and after conferring with local law enforcement, we are allowing them to conduct further investigations into the tragic events,’’ the statement read. “We will also remain closed due to the possibility of inclement weather on Tuesday, January 9th.”

“We apologize for any inconvenience, but the safety of students and staff is our top priority.”

School officials said free counseling is available to students and staff.
