ESPN’s Marly Rivera fired after confrontation with reporter over Yankees’ Aaron Judge interview
An ESPN reporter has been fired after a confrontation with another reporter, who she says tried to steal time with New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge.
The New York Post is reporting Marly Rivera called freelance reporter Ivón Gaete, working for Tokyo Broadcasting, a (an expletive C-word) after Gaete attempted to interview Judge, with whom Rivera had reserved time with.
The incident took place prior to the Yankees-Angels game.
Rivera, per the report, tried to explain to Gaete, but Gaete ignored Rivera.
The Post reported that the profanity was caught on video.
“I fully accept responsibility for what I said, which I should not have,” Rivera told The Post. “There were extenuating circumstances but that in no way is an excuse for my actions. I am a professional with a sterling reputation across baseball and I do believe that I am being singled out by a group of individuals with whom I have a long history of professional disagreements.”
Rivera attempted to apologize to Gaete, the wife of MLB VP of Communications John Blundell, but was stiff-armed. Rivera said that she and Blundell have had disagreements over the years, and that’s why the incident led to her firing.
When asked about Rivera’s status, ESPN told the Post: Rivera “no longer works here.”
