ESPN projects UGA player to picked No. 1 over Anderson, Young
The 2023 NFL draft begins three months from Friday, and Alabama will have two players with a shot to be chosen No. 1 overall.
Will Anderson and Bryce Young both have a chance to the Tide’s first No. 1 overall pick since Harry Gilmer in 1948, but the latest mock draft published Wednesday by ESPN’s Mel Kiper has a Georgia player taken instead.
Defensive lineman Jalen Carter is Kiper’s projected No. 1 pick to the Chicago Bears, which would mean back-to-back first overall picks by a Bulldogs program that sent Travon Walker to the Jacksonville Jaguars with the top pick in the 2022 draft.
“Carter, an explosive interior pass-rusher and run-stuffer, gets the nod over Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson, Jr. on my Big Board,” Kiper wrote. “He’s the best player in this draft, a Day 1 starter in the middle of this defense.”
In fact, Young is not Kiper’s first quarterback chosen, either. He predicts the Houston Texans will take Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud with the No. 2 pick, with Young falling to the Indianapolis Colts at No. 4 after Will Anderson was the Arizona Cardinals’ projected pick at No. 3.
“In this scenario, they could take Young, a quick processor with an elite feel for the pocket and how to move around and locate his target,” Kiper wrote. “The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner doesn’t have a big frame, which some NFL scouts will downgrade him for because there aren’t many starting quarterbacks under 200 pounds. I love his tape, though, and I’d be willing to bet on his talent.”
In Kiper’s player rankings also updated Wednesday, which is different from his mock draft, he has Carter first overall followed by Anderson, Kentucky quarterback Will Levis, Young and Stroud.
Several other Alabama players appear on Kiper’s positional rankings. Jahmyr Gibbs is the No. 3 running back, Cameron Latu is the No. 8 tight end, Tyler Steen is the No. 10 offensive tackle, Emil Ekiyor is the No. 3 guard, Byron Young is the No. 10 defensive tackle, Henry To’o To’o is the No. 8 inside linebacker, Brian Branch is the No. 1 safety and Jordan Battle is the No. 8 safety.
Young is still the betting favorite to be chosen No. 1 overall according to odds compiled by TheLines.com. Young is listed by DraftKings at -135, followed by Stroud at +250, Carter and Levis at +550, and Anderson at +750.
The next step in the draft process will be the Senior Bowl next week in Mobile, although none of Alabama’s projected first-round picks are taking part. The NFL combine will be held February 28-March 6 in Indianapolis.
