Enhanced risk for severe weather for part of Alabama on Saturday; storms also possible today, Sunday

The National Weather Service continues to monitor the threat for strong to severe storms in Alabama today, Saturday and Sunday.

Isolated severe storms will be possible today and Sunday, but Saturday will feature the highest risk for storms the state has seen in a while.

And Saturday’s stronger storms could affect parts of the state during the overnight hours (Saturday into Sunday), so it’s important to make sure your method of getting weather warnings is up to date.

On Saturday part of west Alabama will have a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather, also called an enhanced risk.

An enhanced risk means that numerous severe storms will be possible, including a strong (EF2+) tornado. The enhanced risk area in Alabama has grown some since yesterday’s update.

A larger area in west and central Alabama will have a Level 2 (slight) risk for severe weather on Saturday, which means that scattered severe storms will be possible.

All of the rest of the state will have a Level 1 (marginal) risk on Saturday, which means that isolated severe storms will be possible.

Here’s a look at what forecasters are expecting over the next three days.

TODAY (FRIDAY)

Rain and storms will be possible across all of Alabama today, but the areas in dark green could get an isolated severe storm.SPC

Today the focus for any stronger storms to form will be in south and west Alabama. The Storm Prediction Center has a Level 1 out of 5 (marginal) risk for areas including Mobile, Greenville and as far north as Tuscaloosa (although severe storms are not as likely there).

According to the National Weather Service the main threat will be straight-line winds. There could be a lower threat for a tornado and large hail.

The timeframe for today’s stronger storms will be this afternoon into this evening, although rain and storms were moving across the state on Friday morning.

SATURDAY

Saturday could be the big day in terms of severe storms. All of the state will have some sort of severe weather risk on Saturday, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Saturday’s strongest storms are expected starting in the afternoon, and they could last all the way into Sunday morning.

Areas in west Alabama could have a strong tornado (EF2 or stronger). Tornadoes, wind gusts to 60 mph, hail and heavy rain will be possible for the rest of the state as well.

SUNDAY

Sunday severe weather outlook

A Level 1 threat for severe weather will linger into Sunday for eastern Alabama.SPC

Storms will still be moving through the state early Sunday morning, but the weather service thinks they should lose intensity as they push eastward.

However, there will remain the risk for an isolated severe storm through the morning hours on Sunday, with a tornado, damaging winds and heavy rain all possible.

The rain is expected to end from west to east on Sunday, and drier conditions are expected until Tuesday, when the next weather system is expected. So far no severe weather is anticipated with Tuesday’s system.
