Enhanced risk for severe weather for Alabama on Friday
More severe storms are in the forecast for parts of Alabama starting late Friday night, and the risk for the northwest corner of the state has been elevated.
Tornadoes, damaging winds and heavy rain will all be possible with the strongest storms. Severe weather will be possible not just over northwest Alabama but parts of north, central and west Alabama as well. South Alabama could get rain and storms on Saturday morning, but as of now no severe weather is expected in that part of the state.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 3 out of 5 risk, or enhanced risk, for northwest Alabama including Florence and Russellville for Friday.
A Level 3 risk means that numerous severe storms will be possible.
Most of the rest of north Alabama will have a Level 2 risk (scattered severe storms possible), and parts of central and west Alabama will have a Level 1 risk (isolated severe storms possible).
Storms are expected from late Friday night (9 p.m. and onward) into Saturday morning. They could be the most intense in northwest Alabama and could lose some steam as they track to the southeast during the overnight hours.
MORE STORMS NEXT WEEK?
Unfortunately this isn’t the only upcoming risk for severe weather for Alabama. Forecasters are looking ahead to next week, when more storms will be possible.
The timing of next week’s storms is highly uncertain and could change, but as of Wednesday morning the Storm Prediction Center has a risk for severe weather in Alabama in the Tuesday night-Wednesday morning timeframe.
Keep an eye on the forecast, which will continue to evolve over the coming days.
