Elon Musk’s Twitter deal back on, avoids potential trial
Elon Musk is once again interested in buying Twitter.
According to the BBC and Bloomberg, the billionaire has changed his mind after walking away from a potential deal and is now interested in the social media platform.
In a letter to the firm, obtained by the BBC and Bloomberg, Musk agreed to pay the same $44 billion offered months ago before he tried to walk away from the deal.
Musk made the proposal, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that confirmed a Bloomberg report. Shares of Twitter climbed as much as 18 percent on the news earlier Tuesday, and trading has since been halted.
Twitter had sued Musk to force the takeover to move forward. Shareholders have already approved the sale, and legal experts say Musk faced a huge challenge to defend against a Twitter lawsuit, which was filed in July.
Musk, who has more than 100 million Twitter followers, first offered to buy the firm for $54.20 per share in April. The agreement valued the social media platform at roughly $44 billion.
He hesitated, however, citing concerns that the number of fake accounts was higher than Twitter claimed.
The suit was scheduled to go to trial Oct. 17.
