Eli Gold announces he’s battling ‘treatable’ form of cancer

After missing the entire 2022 Alabama football season, the voice of the Crimson Tide shared news about his health troubles.

Eli Gold on Friday announced said he was diagnosed with “a treatable form of cancer,” via social media.

The play-by-play man on Alabama radio broadcasts since 1988, Gold announced before the season he’d be missing time as he dealt with heath issues. Chris Stewart filled the role for the 2022 season while Gold called in to a few broadcasts for updates. He said the Iron Bowl was one of his goals on the phone before Alabama beat Auburn on Nov. 26.

“I really wanted to be able to get back on the air to do the Iron Bowl, and then look ahead toward later this season and next year,” Gold said that day. “It just didn’t work out.”

Back in September, Gold said his issues were more orthopedic than an illness.

Gold turned 69 in December.
