Ed Sheeran gives Florida high school band students the surprise of their lives
Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran gave a group of Florida high school students what was likely the surprise of their young lives this past Friday.
In Tampa for a concert Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium, Sheeran learned students in the Middleton and Blake High School band program were learning his song “Eyes Closed.’
So, Friday afternoon, just as the students were performing the song, in walked Sheeran, guitar in hand. He listened for a moment before joining in. When the song finished, the clearly shocked students erupted in applause, as seen in videos posted to Facebook by both Sheeran and the Hillsborough County (Fla.) Public Schools.
“Thanks for doing that,” he said. “I thought I’d come and play some songs for you. I’ve also brought some guitars to give to you guys for the music department.”
Applause erupted again, but Sheeran wasn’t done.
“Also, I’m playing a sold out stadium tomorrow night, but I’ve got tickets for all you guys to come,” he said, this time eliciting tears along with raucous screams and applause.
But, Sheeran noted, Saturday night’s concert would be in front of a stadium of 73,000 fans, “so I’m going to play a tiny concert for you right now, if that’s ok.”
He played a few of his hits and then stayed to take selfies and sign autographs, including at least one yearbook for a young man who looked like he might faint.
“That was amazing,” Sheeran said afterward. “What a vibe. Great energy. Amazing musicians. They’re doing a wonderful thing with school music. That’s my favorite thing I’ve done this week.”
