Eagles vs. Buccaneers Wild Card playoff odds preview
Philly started off strong at 10-1 but had a decidedly ugly finish to the regular season as the Eagles dropped five of their final six games to finish 11-6 and miss out on the NFC East title.
As a result, the Eagles are the NFC’s fifth seed and likely will have to win three road playoff games to return to the Super Bowl.
A porous defense has been the primary culprit for Philly, ranking 30th in average points per game allowed (25.2) and 26th in total yards surrendered (356.1).
That’s nearly negated QB Jalen Hurts and a productive Eagles offense that averages 25.5 points (seventh) per outing.
Philadelphia’s minus-10 turnover differential, though, was sixth worst in the league.
The Bucs (9-8), meanwhile, were nearly mirror opposites down the stretch, winning five of their final six games to repeat as NFC South champs and earn a home wild-card game.
Free agent QB Baker Mayfield has enjoyed a surprisingly strong season (28 TD passes, 10 interceptions), but Tampa Bay still finished below average (20th) in scoring with 20.5 points per game.
The Bucs’ defense, though, ranked seventh with 19.1 points permitted per contest and had 26 takeaways.
Still, the Eagles are 2.5-point road favorites (-152 moneyline) Monday night with a game total hovering around 43.5 points.
Eagles vs. Buccaneers wild-card playoff best bet: Buccaneers +3 (-120 or better)
The Eagles beat the Bucs 25-11 in a Week 3 Monday night matchup in Tampa — finishing with a commanding 472-174 total yardage advantage — and they’re only 12 months removed from last season’s near-Super season.
But Philly’s down-the-stretch struggles and defensive shortcomings have become increasingly harder to ignore. So is the Eagles’ injury report. No. 1 wide receiver A.J. Brown has been confirmed as out with a sprained knee suffered in last weekend’s loss to the New York Giants, while starting safeties Reed Blankenship (groin) and Sydney Brown (knee) missed the first two practices of the week.
The Bucs, meanwhile, enter the game with ample momentum, and their 11-6 (overall) and 8-3 (as an underdog) against-the-spread records are among the league’s best.
Trust the trends and numbers and take Tampa Bay to cover at home in what should be a tight game.
Eagles vs. Buccaneers Wild Card playoff top player prop: Mike Evans over 66.5 receiving yards (-119 or better)
Mayfield’s top target finished ninth in the league this season with 1,255 yards (73.8 per game) and 13 TDs on 79 receptions and 136 targets.
The Eagles, meanwhile, ranked only ahead of the defenseless Washington Commanders in surrendering an average of 183.8 yards per outing and 27 total TDs to opposing wideouts.
A big night from Evans has the chance to propel the Bucs into the divisional round, and you can expect Mayfield to look his way early and often Monday to go right at one of the league’s worst secondaries.
