Eagles sign Landon Dickerson to $84 million contract
After two Pro Bowl seasons, the Philadelphia Eagles moved to lock up Landon Dickerson by signing the former Alabama All-American to a contract extension that has the highest average annual value for any guard in NFL history.
The Eagles announced the four-year extension on Monday. Dickerson was eligible for a contract extension after playing three seasons, and the new contract will keep the offensive lineman from entering free agency after the 2024 season.
Dickerson’s deal has a base value of $84 million with a signing bonus of $20 million and guaranteed money of $50 million, NFL Network and ESPN reported.
The $21 million annual average value of the contract is a high mark for a guard.
The only guard with a bigger contract than Dickerson is the Atlanta Falcons’ Chris Lindstrom, who is playing on a five-year, $102.5 million deal.
Dickerson earned unanimous All-American recognition and won the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center for Alabama’s undefeated 2020 CFP national championship team.
Philadelphia used the 37th selection in the 2021 NFL Draft on Dickerson despite not knowing when he might start practicing, let alone be ready to play.
Dickerson had suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during Alabama’s 52-46 victory over Florida in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 19, 2020, and he didn’t practice with his new NFL teammates until two weeks before Philadelphia’s season-opening game.
But when right guard Brandon Brooks sustained a season-ending injury in the second game of the 2021 campaign, Dickerson finished the contest in that spot. Dickerson started the next game at right guard, then switched to left guard for 13 more starts after Isaac Seumalo joined Brooks on the sideline with a season-ending injury.
Dickerson has stayed at left guard for the past two seasons and earned selection for the Pro Bowl Games both years.
Dickerson’s background at center provides Philadelphia with an option at the position after the retirement of Jason Kelce last week. Kelce had been the Eagles’ center for the previous 13 seasons.
