Eagles pick coordinator for QB Jalen Hurts, offense
Quarterback Jalen Hurts has a new offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles.
After announcing last week that Brian Johnson would not be back after one season in the role, the Eagles are adding Kellen Moore as the offensive coordinator on Nick Sirianni’s coaching staff, NFL Network and ESPN reported on Sunday.
During a Wednesday press conference, Sirianni said Philadelphia was seeking “fresh ideas” for Hurts and its offense after the Eagles stumbled down the stretch in the 2023 season.
Philadelphia won the NFC championship for the 2022 season with Shane Steichen in his second year as offensive coordinator. After Steichen left to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, the Eagles promoted Johnson from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator for 2023.
Philadelphia won 10 of its first 11 games this season before losing six of its final seven, including a 32-9 setback against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the NFC playoffs.
Philadelphia finished seventh in points and eighth in yards among the NFL’s 32 teams during the 2023 regular season. In 2022, the Eagles ranked second in points and second in yards.
A star quarterback at Boise State, Moore finished seventh in 2009, fourth in 2010 and eighth in 2011 in the voting for the Heisman Trophy.
Moore played in three regular-season games, with two starts, for the Dallas Cowboys during his NFL career.
Moore began his coaching career as the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach in 2018. He was Dallas’ offensive coordinator from 2019 through 2022 and handled that duty for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023.
On Wednesday, Sirianni said the new coordinator and Hurts “are going to work hand-in-hand to make sure we’re getting back to where we need to be.”
In 2022, Hurts completed 306-of-460 passes for 3,701 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions for a passing-efficiency rating of 101.5 and ran for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on 165 carries in 15 regular-season games.
In 2023, the former Alabama QB completed 352-of-538 passes for 3,858 yards with 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions for a passing-efficiency rating of 89.1 and ran for 605 yards and 15 touchdowns on 157 carries in 17 regular-season games.
Moore is coming aboard in Philadelphia after the Eagles announced on Saturday that Vic Fangio would be their defensive coordinator in the 2024 season. Fangio worked as the Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator in 2023, his 20th season in that role for an NFL team. Fangio also was the head coach of the Denver Broncos from 2019 through 2021.
