Eagles elevate Julio Jones for Sunday night game
The Philadelphia Eagles have elevated wide receiver Julio Jones from their practice squad, the NFL team announced on Saturday afternoon.
The designation makes Jones eligible to play when the Eagles take on the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night.
Jones practiced for the first time with Philadelphia on Wednesday after signing with the Eagles on Tuesday. The former Foley High School and Alabama standout had been out football since becoming an unrestricted free agent on March 15.
Jones most recently played on Jan. 16, when he caught seven passes for 74 yards and one touchdown in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 31-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in an NFL playoff game.

“You’re going to be tempted to want to put him in because he’s a phenomenal player who’s done a lot in this league,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said on Friday about the team’s plans for Jones. “But we’re going to have to make sure that we’re not putting him in danger. Doing what we need to do to help us win the game and doing what he needs to do to help us win the game, but also being smart with his rep count just because of the elevated risk of injury if you put him in for too much.”
In each of the previous three seasons, Jones has missed seven games with a hamstring injury.
Each NFL team is allowed to elevate two practice-squad members to active status for each game.
The Eagles will square off against the Dolphins in a showdown of one-loss teams at 7:20 p.m. CDT Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. NBC will televise the game.
