Eagles capitalize on winning DNA from Alabama, Georgia
Alabama and Georgia will square off in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday. But a solid sampling of alumni of the two programs are working together to play for another championship in February.
At 10-1, the Philadelphia Eagles have the best record in the NFL this season, thanks to a series of second-half comebacks.
On Sunday, the Eagles trailed the Buffalo Bills 17-7 after a first half that “couldn’t have been much worse,” according to Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni. But Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes in the second half and ran for a TD in overtime to lift Philadelphia to a 37-34 victory.
It wasn’t an isolated incident. The Eagles had won their previous three games after trailing at halftime and have a 5-0 record in that circumstance this season. The rest of the NFL has compiled a 35-129 record when trailing at halftime in 2023.
In regular-season games started by Hurts, Philadelphia has won 10 of its past 11 when trailing or tied at halftime.
“Our guys know how to win,” Sirianni said. “Why do our guys know how to win? Part of that’s the product of what we’ve done here the last couple of years. Part of that’s the product of we got some guys that are still around from the 2017 Super Bowl team. Part of that is we got a lot of guys from Georgia that win a lot, that have won a lot. We got a lot of guys from Alabama who’ve won a lot.
“And I think the most important one is we’ve done it together. You can win at all these different places, but when you do it together and find ways to win together, nobody flinches. We’ve been in this situation before.”
Hurts played three seasons at Alabama before finishing his college career at Oklahoma.
Philadelphia has six other Crimson Tide alumni on its active roster, more than any other NFL team. The other former Alabama players on the Eagles’ active roster are:
· Guard Landon Dickerson
· Cornerback Josh Jobe
· Wide receiver Julio Jones
· Cornerback Eli Ricks
· Wide receiver DeVonta Smith
· Offensive lineman Tyler Steen
The Philadelphia practice squad includes former Alabama offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher.
Six Georgia alumni have played for the Eagles this season, more than any other NFL team has put on the field.
Philadelphia’s player from Georgia include defensive tackles Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, cornerback Kelee Ringo, linebacker Nolan Smith and running back D’Andre Swift, with linebacker Nakobe Dean on injured reserve.
On Sunday, the Eagles winning know-how will be tested by the San Francisco 49ers. Philadelphia defeated the 49ers 31-7 in last year’s NFC Championship Game, and San Francisco has an 8-3 mark, tied for second-best in the conference this season.
The 49ers don’t have any Alabama alumni on their active roster, although tight end Cameron Latu is on injured reserve. San Francisco has two former Georgia players – defensive lineman Robert Beal Jr. and tight end Charlie Woerner.
