Eagles All-Pro puts Jalen Hurts on Oklahoma’s ledger

The success of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts during the 2022 NFL season sparked a rivalry between Alabama and Oklahoma fans.

Hurts played on three teams that went to the CFP national championship game in three seasons at Alabama. After transferring to Oklahoma, Hurts finished as the runner-up for the 2019 Heisman Trophy in his only season with the Sooners.

So which is it for Hurts?

“When he got drafted, it said ‘Oklahoma’ on it, I believe,” said Lane Johnson, the Eagles’ All-Pro right offensive tackle, “so I’m going with Oklahoma.”

Johnson is an alumnus of Oklahoma.

The fourth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Johnson was in Point Clear on Sunday night for his induction into the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame with the Class of 2023.

Even without counting Hurts, Johnson has five teammates who are Alabama alumni – guard Landon Dickerson, cornerbacks Josh Jobe and Eli Ricks, wide receiver DeVonta Smith and offensive lineman Tyler Steen.

Dickerson earned Pro Bowl recognition as the Eagles’ left guard and Smith had 95 receptions for 1,196 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022, the second NFL season for each player, as Philadelphia won the NFC championship.

“I’ve found all those guys extremely talented, extremely durable,” Johnson said of his Alabama teammates, “and that’s really the reason that they’ve been so successful. They get great players and usually it transitions extremely well to the league.”

Steen joined Philadelphia in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The left tackle for Alabama in 2022, Steen worked at guard, too, during his stop at the Reese’s Senior Bowl in February, and his path to the field as a rookie with the Eagles appears to be at right guard.

“You can see the footwork of a talented left tackle and you can see the body of a guard that’s getting it done in the middle,” Johnson said of Steen. “A young guy, but when you see his attributes, his length, his height, especially how he moves his feet, I’m definitely excited.”

The alma maters of Johnson, his Alabama teammates and Hurts (either one) will be playing in the same conference in the 2024 football season when Oklahoma and Texas join the SEC’s membership roster.

“I’m excited,” Johnson said. “I feel like (Sooners coach) Brent (Venables), he’s established a good culture. He faced a little bit of adversity this year, but I feel like, as I was talking about earlier, Bob Stoops started 7-5 his first year and was in the national championships competing the next few years. So I’m excited. I feel like the competition will be stiffer than what people think, but it’ll be interesting to see how all the teams match up. It’ll be exciting for the viewer, I know that.”
